Personally, as a scenic and travel photographer, I’m mostly interested in the scenery.

There are the ocean sunrises and sunsets, the onboard entertainment, the Fjords of Norway and Alaska, the colorful sights of virtually any port, just the images I’ve captured from the ship have been worth the price of admission in my book.

Excursions and Exploring in port

Explore the culture, food, activities, and people in ports around the world. They offer unlimited photographic opportunities. I’m a sucker for waterfalls. lighthouses and unusual or historic architecture. I love getting acquainted with cultures new to me.

Checking out the decor, art and people on board.

I love ship life. One of my favorite parts cruising is exploring the ship itself. Each has its own style, with art, features and facilities hoping to stand out in your memory. There are locations for enjoying solitude, or excitement, relaxing or getting thrills.

My second favorite onboard activity is eating

I enjoy the relaxing pace of dining in the main dining room. That’s where I first tried escargot and a few other dishes for the first time. It’s where I may order a couple of appetizers and probably a couple of desserts, from a menu without prices. I like having room service at midnight if I feel inclined, or hitting the buffet when I want a lot of choices and the freedom to go back for that dish that was so amazing. When I’m cruising is the only time I have the luxury of breakfast, making breakfast feel like vacation to me. Oh yeah, I always put on some weight, but it comes off pretty quickly when I return to real life.

If you have dietary restrictions, there are always options available to you.

I’ve never been on an ocean cruise. What am I missing?

I enjoy cruising so much, that it seems amazing to me now that I was ever skeptical. My sister and her husband had been on dozens of cruises and introduced us to it with an inexpensive 4 day cruise with 3 ports. I was immediately hooked on the gourmet dining, the variety of live music, the big production shows, the scenery at sea, and ship life. Some people love the casino, the selection of bars, the spa treatments, and visiting a new destinations without packing and unpacking at each one. There are so many things to like.

How do I choose which cruise to take?

There are a variety of ways to pick a great cruise. Sometimes I start by selecting a cruise line and a ship I want to experience. Sometimes I have a specific departure port in mind, or a specific destination I want to visit. Sometimes I’m not picky about those factors, but just want something that leaves ot returns on a specific week. Sometimes I’m not particular and can just look for a great value. The key is to determine your priorities, and then we can work backwards, narrowing the selection down with each less important priority, until we find the perfect cruise that checks all the bozes.

I’m not rich. Isn’t cruising an expensive way to vacation?

It is possible to spend a lot of money on an indulgent luxury cruise line during peak season, but if you’re looking for a way to make the most efficient use of limited vacation funds, it’s hard to do better than a cruise on one of several slightly less extravagant ctuise lines. The fact that your accommodations, meals and entertainment, as well as transportation to various desirable destinations. is essentially all included in a daily price range approximately equivalent to a modest hotel room alone, makes it a remarkable value .

Which cruise line is best?

If you’re like me, and have a limited vacation budget, then I look to cruise lines I can afford like Princess, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, Costa and MSC. Depending on how new and large their ships may be, and the destinations you’re looking for, even the prices on these lines may vary significantly. Each however, will offer great value if you’re willing and able to look for the right sailing. That’s where it is great to have someone like us who spends a lot of time searching them out. Cunard has a reputation as a more luxury oriented brand that bills itself as an ocean liner, rather than a cruise ship, but we have booked a great deal on an 11 day Alaska cruise in June. Even luxury lines like Azamara can be fairly affordable for repositioning cruises.

How do I decide which type of cabin I should book?

Generally the most affordable cabins are inside cabins that don’t have a window, but may have a large screen that acts as a virtual window. For a little more, you can get a window room with or without a slightly obstructed view. Balcony rooms cost more but may provide a larger cabin, a way to get fresh air and a greater access to views. I consider this a priority on an Alaska cruise where there is a lot of scenery even on sea days. If you need more room, most ship s will offer “mini-suites” or full suites, which may also include more dining or spa benefits but come at a significantly higher cost. There are often exceptions to these general guidelines though, and deals can often be found where nicer cabins are accessible to those of us on a budget.

How do I find out about a great cruise value?

We spend a significant amount of time searching out various options that suit the needs of our customers. In any month, there are literally thousands of cruises departing various ports around the world. It can seem intimidating. As soona s we can determine your own interests and preferences, we can quickly filter down a more manageable list of options that you can choose from. Each cruise has its potential advantages and disadvantages. We like cruises that depart on a weekend, for example, we can even filter for the day of the week you leave or return, if trying to choose between several great sounding options. Some people like larger ships. Some prefer smaller ones. We give you a better chance of finding just the right cruise for you.
